Midjourney

Midjourney is an AI image generator known for its aesthetic quality. You describe an image in a few words, the prompt, and it produces several options you can vary, upscale or edit. Built by an independent research lab in San Francisco, it has become the benchmark for illustrators, designers and creatives.

How does Midjourney work?

Midjourney is used through its web app, midjourney.com, or on Discord. The default model is version 8.2 (V8.2). You refine results with parameters (aspect ratio, style, creativity), can start from a reference image and edit a specific area. Midjourney also turns images into videos, in standard definition or HD depending on the plan.

Midjourney pricing in 2026

There is no free plan; a subscription is required. Monthly prices, with 20% off on annual billing:

• Basic: $10 per month, 3.3 hours of fast generation.

Our verdict on Midjourney

Pros: visual quality that often beats the competition, strong style consistency and a community that shares its prompts.

Cons: no free plan, and creations are publicly visible on Basic and Standard, which lack Stealth mode. For legible text in images or very precise instructions, other tools sometimes do better.

Midjourney alternatives

• Leonardo AI: a daily free plan and many image and video models.
• Ideogram: especially strong at legible text in images.
• Adobe Firefly: built into Photoshop and Adobe's apps.
• Recraft: specialised in vector illustrations and brand visuals.
• Flux: highly realistic models, partly available as open source.
